EDAC set to move to the Orange Hub in January 2019
After three years in the recently revitalized Alberta Block Building (former CKUA building) on Jasper Avenue, EDAC is moving to the Orange Hub (MacEwan U’s former Centre for the Arts) on Stony Plain Road. The move will double the classroom capacity for the college and allow EDAC students to utilize the various production studio spaces available at the Orange Hub.
“The Orange Hub is almost tailor-made for our school!” exclaims EDAC’s executive director, Owen Brierley. “There is so much opportunity for us to explore collaborations between our industries and our students. With studio space like this we can try new ideas and encourage a greater intersection of arts and technology.”
Part of the strategy behind the move is paving the way for other organizations to join EDAC in the space. “We are talking with groups like the Film and Video Arts Society (FAVA), Edmonton Screen Industries Office, Interactive Arts Alberta, Edmonton Short Film Festival, and others, to encourage a creative hub within the Orange Hub. There is always value in sharing resources, discovering new partnerships, and really pushing the envelope for the new ways of thinking about media production.”
“Leaving downtown and the Alberta Block Building was not an easy decision. Tegan Martin-Drysdale has the right vision for the Alberta Block and we are eager to see her continue to pursue the path she invited us to be part of three years ago.”
“The tipping point for us was the opportunity to move into a building that would enhance our proximity to organizations that share our needs and allow us to really activate the Orange Hub’s creative production spaces. Those studio spaces deserve to be utilized continuously. This idea of proximity is key. We need to bring our communities together and then encourage dialog and collaboration. Many of the greatest works come from producers sharing experiences and collaborating. As a hub, we can help support media creators in Edmonton and challenge one another to create media that people want.”
The Orange Hub is hosting a public Open House on Thursday Nov. 8th at 7pm. EDAC will be there showcasing their programs and doing tours of the space the college will call home beginning in January 2019.
