Application Process

Fill out our ONLINE APPLICATION FORM to begin the process. Once we have your application, we will guide you through the remaining steps (listed below). If you have any questions, please email us or call 780-429-4878.

Submit (email, mail, or drop off) the following documents:

a) A letter of interest – addressed to the Executive Director, Owen Brierley. Please express why you are interested in the program you are applying for, what your career intentions are, and what would make you a good candidate for Edmonton Digital Arts College.

b) Transcripts – High School and/or Post Secondary transcripts are required. Please contact us if you do not have official transcripts, we can work together to get them.

c) Resume/Personal Profile – outline your work experience, education and skills.

Prepare your portfolio. You will bring your portfolio to your admissions appointment. See the “Portfolio Requirements” below for the specific requirements for your program.

Contact our Registrar to book an admissions appointment. During the admissions appointment, you will write the entrance examination and you will be interviewed by one or more of our faculty. During this time, you will present your portfolio. See the “Entrance Exam & Interview” tab for more information.

Portfolio Requirements

DIGITAL MEDIA PRODUCTION PROGRAM PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS

Submit a portfolio (flexible in content and level of formality) to demonstrate your creativity. Show us some of your best work. Your portfolio may include artwork, illustrations, photography, video/audio production or digital content. EDAC prefers disks, web links, photocopies or CDs of your original work. Please DO NOT sent original work. We prefer digital copies, but if you choose to submit physical work please do so via mail, courier or drop off. Be sure to indicate “Portfolio” clearly and visibly on the package. The Edmonton Digital Arts College is not responsible for lost or damaged items.

DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION & SEQUENTIAL ART PROGRAM PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS

Your portfolio should contain a minimum of 10 pieces of work, primarily pencil and ink but we will accept other mediums if you feel that they are your best work. We require that you submit the following work in your portfolio:

  • A still life drawing (bowl of fruit, potted plant, etc. Please do not copy from a photograph)
  • A drawing of the human figure
  • A self portrait (please do not copy from a photograph)
  • A landscape drawing
  • A perspective drawing
  • 2 sample drawings from a sketchbook

The remaining pieces can be of whatever you want. Characters you’ve designed, comic strips, and various illustrations. We ask that all artwork be original with no copyrighted figures or characters.

You can choose whether to submit a physical portfolio or a digital portfolio. Please follow the appropriate guidelines below.

Physical Portfolio

If you are submitting a physical portfolio, please provide copies of your artwork. No originals please. The Edmonton Digital Arts College is not responsible for lost or damaged items. Your portfolio should demonstrate a solid effort to professionally present your artwork.

Digital Portfolio

If you are submitting a digital portfolio, please provide us with a single PDF file. Each image should be on a separate page of the PDF. Your digital portfolio must include a title page with your name and contact information. Please take care to present a professional image. Part of the consideration of your portfolio is the effort you put in when presenting your work.

Please ensure that each image has a maximum length or height of 1000 pixels and a resolution of 72 dpi.

We prefer that you scan* your images, but if you must photograph your images please follow these guidelines:

  • There should be no distracting details in the image, only your artwork should be visible
  • The lighting should be diffuse and even so there is no glare, hotspots or dark shadows on the image

*If you do not have a scanner, most public libraries have high-resolution scanners available for the general public to use at no or low cost.

DIGITAL ANIMATION PRODUCTION PROGRAM PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS

Be sure to indicate “Portfolio” clearly and visibly on the package. The Edmonton Digital Arts College is not responsible for lost or damaged items.

VIDEO GAME DESIGN PROGRAM

NO PORTFOLIO REQUIRED

Entrance Exam

Our customized exam measures your basic computer knowledge, reading comprehension, mathematical ability and creativity. You’ll be given 3 hours to complete the exam. A score of 60% or higher is required to pass.
Students are permitted to use a calculator during the exam. Please bring a pencil and eraser.

Admissions Interview with Executive Director

The final step in our application process is to have an admissions interview  with our Executive Director about your career goals, background and review your portfolio. This is a terrific opportunity for us to get to know you, and what you expect from EDAC.  In turn, our Executive Director will share our expectations of a EDAC student and determine whether or not EDAC can help you achieve your goals.

Upon completion of the above steps and provided you are accepted, EDAC will provide you with an official acceptance letter and your digital media education begins!
