Academic Prerequisite Requirements

Minimum Institutional Prerequisite Requirements

General:
Applicants must possess a high school diploma, have achieved a grade of at least 60% in four grade 12 subjects, including a grade of 60% or in a 30-level English course (or equivalent), and meet English proficiency requirements. There are also specific portfolio requirements for all applicants.

Canadian applicants must possess a High School Diploma or GED, with at least 60% in four grade 12 subjects, including one of the following:

Alberta Residents:
Alberta
English 30 or English 30-1 (ELA 30-1) with a minimum grade of 60%; or
English 33 or English 30-2 (ELA 30-2) with a minimum grade of 65%;

Equivalent Requirements for residents outside Alberta:

Northwest Territories, and Nunavut
English 30 or English 30-1 (ELA 30-1) with a minimum grade of 60%; or
English 33 or English 30-2 (ELA 30-2) with a minimum grade of 65%;

Ontario
English Grade 12 U (ENG4U) course with a minimum of 60%

British Columbia and Yukon
English 12 with a minimum of 60%; or
English 12 First Peoples

Manitoba
English 40S (ELA40S) with a minimum of 60%

New Brunswick
English 121 or 122 with a minimum of 60%

Newfoundland
English 3201 with a minimum of 60%

Nova Scotia
English 12 Academic (English 3201) with a minimum of 60%

Prince Edward Island
English 611 or 621 with a minimum of 60%

Quebec CEGEP
English Literature 603 series with a minimum of 60%

Saskatchewan
English A30 and B30 with a minimum of 60%

Please be advised that this list is not exhaustive, and that EDAC may accept other courses, as determined by the Admissions Office. (For specific questions about unlisted courses, please contact the Admissions Office.)

Mature:
Canadian Citizens or permanent residents/ landed immigrants who are 20 years of age or older may be considered for admission as mature applicants provided they possess one of the following:

1) English Language Arts 30-1 with a minimum grade of 60%; or English Language Arts 30-2 with a minimum grade of 65%; or Equivalent Courses as determined by the Admissions Office. If you are from outside of Alberta, please review our equivalent requirements.​

2) Certain applicants may wish to apply using EDAC’s Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR) process. Please see details on this process below. (Those interested in this process may contact the Admissions Office for more information about the PLAR process.)

International:

To be accepted into EDAC, you’ll need to demonstrate proficiency in English by meeting one of the following requirements:

  • Successful completion of at least two years of full-time instruction in a high school where English is the language of instruction, including a passing grade in a grade 12 English course or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of one year of full-time instruction (18 credits) at a post-secondary institution where English is the language of instruction, including at least one transferrable English course in composition or literature.
  • A score of 83 or higher on an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) on the Internet-based test (iBT), with a minimum score of 20 in each of the four testing sections, 560 on the paper-based test (PBT), or 220 on the computer-based test (CBT).
  • A score of 70 or higher on the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) assessment.
  • A score of 6.5 or higher on the International English Language Test (IELTS).

Program Specific Academic Pre-Requisite Requirements

Digital Media Production
Three subjects from group A, B, or C at least two of which must be from group A or B.

Video Game Design
Mathematics 30-x passing grade, Math 20-1 minimum 60%, Math 20-2 65%, or out of province equivalent.
Advanced level Computer Science related courses are strongly recommended.

Digital Illustration & Sequential Art
Three subjects from group A, B, or C at least two of which must be from group A or B.

3D Animation Production
Related Media, Design & Communications Study courses are strongly recommended.
